Long Beach is a city located in southern Los Angeles County and is approximately twenty (20) miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Long Beach is the 5th largest city in California with one of the largest shipping ports in the world called the Port of Long Beach. The City is the home to large oil industry interests and manufacturers of aircraft, automobile parts, electronic and audiovisual equipment, home furnishings and prestigious real estate.

Originally, Long Beach was granted from the King of Spain to Manuel Nieto in 1784 and was known as Rancho Los Nietos. Later this ranch was divided into two ranches called Rancho Los Cerritos and Rancho Los Alamitos and along with a third ranch, Rancho San Pedro, they made up the city later known as Long Beach. In 1843 Rancho Los Cerritos was sold to John Temple who created a successful cattle ranch becoming the wealthiest man in Los Angeles County. Then in 1866 Temple sold Rancho Los Cerritos to a Northern California sheep-raising firm of Flint, Bixby & Company. The company put Jotham Bixby (known as the “Father of Long Beach”) in charge with managing Rancho Los Cerritos.

In 1880, Bixby sold a portion of the rancho to a developer who sought to create a large farm community but failed. A Los Angeles syndicate (calling itself the “Long Beach Land & Water Company”) bought the 4,000 acres and changed the community name to “Long Beach” and incorporated the city in 1888. Meanwhile John Bixby put together another group of investors to buy the Rancho Los Alamitos. Under the name of the Alamitos Land Company they developed the property along the oceanfront near the City’s picturesque bluffs. Laying out the streets and the parks this area became the communities of Belmont Heights, Belmont Shore and Naples (kept separate while owned by the Bixby heirs until later becoming a part of Long Beach). The balance of the 3,500 acres was subdivided into the Long Beach neighborhoods of Bixby Knolls, California Heights, North Long Beach and parts of Signal Hill after Jotham Bixby died in 1916. Subsequent to 1916, the City of Long Beach flourished into several sub-communities.
