Queen Ann Style: This Victorian Architecture style is evident in a few Long Beach historic districts, most notably the Bembridge House at 953 Park Circle Drive in the Drake Park/Willmore City Historic District. The Queen Anne buildings in America came into style in the 1880s, replacing the French derived Second Empire as the most popular style for new construction. As a sub-style of the Victorian era, the Queen Anne is a collection of coquettish detailing and eclectic materials. Steep cross-gabled roofs, towers, and vertical windows are typical of this home. Multiple story homes usually contain projecting wings, several porches and balconies, and multiple chimneys with chimney pots. The wooden trim is ordained with rounded "fish-scale" patterns and ornate exterior friezes typically grace gables and porches. This style was created by an English architect, Richard Norman Shaw, and was popularized after the Civel War by architect Henry Hobson Richardson. The style became popular in the South and West.
