When you are searching for the right neighborhood in the Bixby Knolls area it is important to visit California Heights (aka "Cal Heights"). Quaint in style and rich in character and charm, Cal Heights is one of 17 designated historic residential districts within the City of Long Beach, and with approximately 1,500 homes is the largest such district. The City of Long Beach and the residents of Cal Heights take care to maintain the character and history of the region. Predominantly a dense residential area that is located between Lime Avenue to the west, Bixby Road to the north, Gardenia Avenue to the east, and Wardlow to the south. In Cal Heights you will find a range of architectual styles including Spanish Bungalow, California Bungalow, Cape Cods, Ranches and Post-War tract homes (click here for Cal Heights architecture). Most of the original properties are one-story raised foundation homes; however, over the years homeowners have re-built or added on to the original structure by adding rooms or second stories. You will find a wide range of home sizes from 700 square feet to over 3,000 square feet in this community. The homes in Cal Heights have anywhere from 2 to over 4 bedrooms (a few remodeled homes) with 1 to 4 bathrooms. Lot size will also vary from as small as 2,500 square feet to a little over 7,000 on the larger lots. Typical lot size in the area is between 5,000 and 6,500 square feet. Although the lots tend to be on the small side, most homes have adequate space for a backyard ideal for single people, small or young families or "empty nest" couples.
