In 1922, the Bixby Company placed 830 lots in California Heights on the market and sold off 435 lots within twenty-four hours. Nearly a year later, the water, gas, telephone and electric mains necessary for building the homes were completed. The Bixby Company started development with the construction of twenty-five (25) Spanish type bungalows. As the area developed parcel-by-parcel other home styles became popular including Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival and the California Bungalow or Craftsman Bungalow (click here for Cal Heights architecture). By 1939, the initial residential development was complete.

Since the original development, Neo-Traditional homes were built in the late 1930s and 40s. Large mature trees line the streets, while vintage street lights enhance the neighborhood ambience, and special historic designated signs guide your way.
Cal Heights has been referred by the Long Beach Press Telegram as the "poster child for historic preservation." Some residents think that "people look for the sense of home that comes from traditional housing." In many ways Cal Heights is like going back in time, keeping intact its roots which makes for a great neighborhood and a great real estate property investment. Find out why this Long Beach neighborhood was voted the best neighborhood by Sunset Magazine in their January 2004 issue!
